America's Navy Next?
Category: Games -
Post Date: Feb 21, 2009
The navy is experimenting with a game to train it's sailors. The computer program is called "VESSEL and stands for Virtual Environments for Ship and Shore Experiential Learning". It is a combination of both the first person role playing and real time strategy genres. It is the first such tool the navy has used that would be available to all of it's sailors. It currently has flight simulators for pilots and surface officers, this program is designed to be put on a disc that could then be run on a computer in an office or quarters. So far, the trial seems to be working, and in tests sailors that had played VESSEL had faster times, fewer errors, and followed procedure better then those that hadn't.

The Army use a modified version of ARMA for its soldiers, so i don't see why the navy can't use a game too.

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if virtual training become a norm in the near future.

Not remotely. It's like Duke Nukem but with Unreal Engine 3-quality graphics.
